Both Team Gai and Team Kakashi get up from their separate breaks and,
despite Gai and Lee’s urging to go triple or quadruple their normal
speed, the two teams resume their journey to the Akatsuki lair.
Akatsuki
has entered the final stage of extracting Shukaku from Gaara. Though
Itachi and Kisame were able to delay the Konoha shinobi long enough,
they’re still coming, and faster than ever. Therefore, the backup plan,
Sasori and Deidara taking care of them (since they’re the only two
members actually there and the others being holograms), may be put into
action.
Elsewhere, Suna shinobi are preparing not to rescue
Gaara, but for the possibility of invasion from other countries.
Everyone seems fine with this except Matsuri, who thinks differently.
But as Temari explains, rules are rules, and despite how high of a
priority Gaara is, they have to obey their orders no matter what.
With
Team Gai’s squad, Neji is unable to sense the presence of the enemy,
which is odd considering the high level jutsu that was used to distract
them.
Naruto thinks of how similar he and Gaara really are: they
both grew up as isolated human beings with beasts inside of them.
However, as Naruto gradually made friends and allies, Gaara only became
lonelier and lonelier. He, unlike Naruto, never got to receive the
amount of care and appreciation that Naruto has received. Furious,
influences of the Kyuubi slowly seep in as Naruto springs ahead of the
others. Chiyo can’t understand why Naruto, who isn’t even from the same
village as Gaara, would want to go so far to save him. Kakashi tells
her about how Naruto has the Kyuubi within him and how he, like Gaara,
is a Jinchuuriki. Naruto understands Gaara’s feelings more than anyone
in Suna and knows that the life that a Jinchuuriki goes through is the
same, regardless of the village they live in. To Naruto, it’s not about
Suna or Konoha: it’s about rescuing Gaara. Even though Naruto seemed a
bit disappointed in himself when hearing that Gaara became Kazekage, he
still gave Gaara his blessing. It’s just that Naruto has this uncanny
ability to make friends with anyone he meets.
Chiyo’s seen a lot
of things in her life and believed that alliances between countries
were only by name. She was the one who sealed Shukaku into Gaara. Sure,
it was done for the good of the village, but this resulted in more
hardship for Suna; so much that they avoided alliances with any other
villages. It’s ironic that one of the villages they avoided is now
trying to help them.
In what appears to be a hallucination or
vision, Gaara stares contemplatively at his hand Has his existence ever
been needed by anyone? He puts his hand down and sees himself staring
back at him. The one that he’s staring at; that’s the one who wanted to
be needed and wanted by someone else, but why did he want that? Why did
he want all of the functions of his body? What was he originally?
The extraction of Shukaku is finally complete and Gaara lifelessly falls to the ground.
In
Suna, the photo Kankuro has of himself, Temari, and Gaara is brought to
the ground and the glass shatters. This bad omen is a sign to Kankuro
that something bad is brewing.
Team Gai touches down on the
barrier blocking them from entrance to Akatsuki’s lair, but just when
they’re about to formulate a plan, Team Kakashi arrives. The time to
take on Akatsuki directly has finally come.
