After finding that Deidara used a Substitution Jutsu, red chakra starts bubbling up from his body. Deidara watches from a bush as a red tail forms. Kakashi watches and comments that Jiraiya told him about this: the cloak of the demon fox. Naruto's teeth sharpen and his eyes grow larger.

After the full cloak has covered him, he punches the ground causing a large blast. He then jumps over to a nearby rock and looks around, trying to find Deidara. As Deidara watches, blood drips from his mouth and he realizes that this was why he was hitting so hard. A second tail starts to grow and the clones hold their faces, moaning that it burns. Kakashi looks back at the transforming Naruto and remembers something that Jiraiya told him. According to his story, if the cloak appeared, it must be stopped at only one tail or it will be a truly fearsome sight to behold. The second tail finishes and Naruto leaps forward punching a tree and causing a wave of dust to rise in line with the tree. When the smoke clears, the clone with Kakashi disappears because of the pain. Kakashi lands a ways away from Naruto and tells him to calm down.

Instead Naruto attacks Kakashi who dodges the blow. Kakashi realizes that Naruto is losing the ability to think rationally. Kakashi remembers what Jiraiya told him to do in an emergency. Kakashi pulls out the patch that Jiraiya gave him to use to suppress the chakra. He leaps forward and sticks it to Naruto's forehead. Immediately the chakra dissipates and Naruto returns to normal. He falls backward but Kakashi catches him. The two clones with Gaara wipe sweat of their brows.While Naruto catches his breath, Kakashi wonders what Jiraiya saw that was so terrible. Deidara has seen all he wants to see but as he prepares to leave, he hears someone coming and Sakura and Chiyo land in front of him. Naruto is happy to see that they beat Sasori. Chiyo asks about Gaara and Naruto indicates the clones.

Deidara cannot believe that Sasori was beaten but he feels it is time to leave. He crawls out of the bush and right into Gai's team. Gai tells Neji good work. Deidara notices Neji's Byakugan and says he wishes he could see them in action but he says he needs to make his escape. Gai tells him he can’t get away and they all attack. Kakashi and the others hear the sounds of kunai clashing and Kakashi sees Team Gai with his Sharingan. With a kunai in his mouth, Deidara manages to block or dodge most of the attacks but he is having trouble losing the group. He runs off with the others in pursuit and finds what he is looking for, the beheaded body of the clay bird. He lands and takes a bite of the bird. Kakashi warns Team Gai of his long range attacks and explosives and Gai's team lands facing Deidara. Deidara starts to swell up and Neji sees that his chakra is focusing to a single point. Too late he realizes what is going to happen and he tells everyone to run.

As they spring away, Deidara blows and a huge fireball heads toward the group. Neji finds that they won’t make it and everyone turns to look back as the fireball chases them. Calmly, Kakashi closes his eyes and reopens his Sharingan eye, saving everyone right on time. There is a flash of light and when the dust clears, everyone except for Kakashi and Naruto is looking confused. The air around the crater from the explosion is distorted but it returns to normal and Kakashi explains that he sent it to another dimension. He falls backward, but Naruto catches him. Gai looks amazed but he smiles and says that Kakashi is his rival. Naruto's two clones land carrying Gaara. Naruto looks at Sakura and she nods. Chiyo also turns to look.

Later on, in a field, Sakura sets to work on Gaara. Unfortunately, she is unable to do anything to help and she shakes her head to Naruto. She gets up and Naruto starts trembling with grief. Tears run down his face and he asks why Gaara had to die like this. Chiyo tells him to calm down but he turns on her and she sees his tears. He accuses the sand of using Gaara and putting a huge burden on him. He says they have no right to label and use Jinchuuriki as they please. Naruto breaks down and cries and Chiyo looks down with shame. Naruto says to himself that he could not save Sasuke or Gaara and even though he trained for 3 years nothing has changed. With a serious look on her face, Chiyo rises and slowly walks toward Gaara. Naruto stops to watch her. Chiyo kneels before Gaara and watches him for awhile. Finally she closes her eyes touches Gaara's chest and focuses. She opens her eyes again and starts using her special healing technique. Naruto watches to see what she is doing and Kakashi's eyes widen. Sakura tries to stop her but Chiyo just looks at Sakura and Sakura becomes silent, finally knowing what Elder Chiyo meant about her one last task.
